Seoul Affirms Joint View with US on N. Korea Dialogue

The Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed that South Korea and the U.S. share the view that fostering of the right conditions precedes dialogue with North Korea

Ministry spokesman Cho June-hyuck said Thursday that the two sides affirmed the view that talks with the North are possible under the right conditions when a U.S. delegation visited Seoul earlier this week. He said the two sides also agreed to explore bold, practical joint measures to this aim.

The spokesman also assessed President Trump's remarks during a Wednesday meeting with South Korea's special envoy as again showcasing a joint vision shared with Seoul.

Trump expressed willingness to make peace through engagement with Pyongyang if conditions are right but said that he won't hold talks for the sake of talks.

Spokesman Cho explained the U.S. president's remarks are in line with what President Moon Jae-in told a National Security Council meeting last Sunday when he said that talks with North Korea will be possible only when there is change in the North's attitude.
