Special Envoy Emphasizes Russia's Role in Resolving N. Korean Nuke Issue

News2017-05-23

President Moon Jae-in’s special envoy to Russia has said that Moscow can play a crucial role in making North Korea abandon its nuclear program.

Rep. Song Young-gil of the ruling Democratic Party put emphasis on Russia’s role in North Korean nuclear issues on Monday afternoon in a group interview with South Korean reporters upon his arrival at the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow.

Song argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin has a good relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump and communicates better with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un than Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He then said the Russian president will be able to play an important role in leading the North to suspend its nuclear and missile development, adding the measure is essential to the opening of talks between Pyongyang and Washington and the resumption of the six-party talks.

Song also said he will deliver a letter to Putin from Moon, along with his will to strengthen cooperation between South Korea and Russia.

In addition to the call for Russia to play a role in the North Korean nuke issue and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, Song said the letter also contains Moon’s wish for more active participation by South Korea in the development of Russia’s Far Eastern region.

Also in the letter are Seoul’s plans for bilateral logistics projects connecting the two countries via North Korea, using means such as gas pipe, railroad, or electricity, as well as a suggestion for joint development of new North Pole routes.
