Unification Ministry: Gaeseong, Geumgang to be Resolved in Line with Nuke Issue

The Unification Ministry has reaffirmed its stance that the restarting of the inter-Korean joint venture Gaeseong Industry Complex and tours to North Korea’s Mount Geumgang will be promoted in line with progress in the North Korean nuclear issue.
A ministry official said that the resumption of the two inter-Korean joint projects is a long-term task, cautioning against misinterpretation about some government officials’ remarks on the issue.
National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong said on Monday that he will seek ways to resolve the issues of the Gaeseong Industrial Park and Geumgang tours without undermining international sanctions against North Korea.
Presidential special adviser for unification, diplomacy and security Moon Chung-in said in an interview published on Tuesday that he will soon discuss in detail the restarting of the two cross-border joint projects with President Moon Jae-in. However, he defined it as a long-term task.
Regarding concerns about the government’s fast-paced moves in inter-Korean affairs, the ministry official said that the government’s foremost task is to resolve the North Korean nuclear and missile issue and its basic position is to sternly respond to provocations by Pyongyang. He stressed the government’s strong determination to settle the North Korean issue in a peaceful manner.
