Envoy to Russia Emphasizes Trilateral Economic Project as Solution to N. Korean Nuke Issue

President Moon Jae-in’s special envoy to Russia met with the country’s parliamentary leaders and government officials on Tuesday and delivered Moon’s will for strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Rep. Song Young-gil of the ruling Democratic Party said he also called for Russia’s cooperation on bolstering Seoul-Moscow ties.

Song said during the meetings, including with Russia’s Far East Development Minister Alexander Galushka, the Russian side emphasized that the North Korean nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations rather than sanctions and pressure.

In response, Song said he explained Moon’s stance on the issue that South Korea and Russia should strongly restraint the North’s attempts to develop nuclear and missile weapons through close coordination with the international community, while also involving the North with economic cooperation to try and change the regime.

Song said the two sides agreed that trilateral economic projects involving the two Koreas and Russia could be effective means to resolving the North Korean nuclear issue.

Song plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday afternoon to hand him a personal letter from Moon.

He is also expected to discuss with Putin about the North Korean nuclear issue, economic cooperation between Seoul and Moscow or among the two Koreas and Russia, and Moon’s forthcoming visit to Russia.
