Moon, Abe Agree to Add Pressure on N. Korea

President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have agreed on the necessity of strengthening sanctions and pressure on North Korea over its nuclear and missile tests.

The two leaders talked with each other by telephone on Tuesday following the North’s latest missile launch a day earlier.

During the 20-minute telephone talks requested by Japan, Moon said he sympathized with the Japanese Prime Minister’s concern that repeated provocations by the North are posing a threat to Japan.

Abe is said to have maintained a hard line stance against the North, saying the international community should not be fooled by the regime. While agreeing with Abe that now is not the time to talk with the North, Moon expressed his belief that the goal of the sanctions and pressure was to eventually resume denuclerization talks.
