Expert: N. Korea Willing to Talk with U.S.

A U.S. representative present at the latest contact between the U.S. and North Korea in Norway has stressed the need for dialogue with Pyongyang, saying that the regime is willing to hold talks with Washington.

According to Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper on Sunday, Suzanne DiMaggio, director and senior fellow at the U.S. think tank New America, delivered the opinion in a forum held in Washington on Friday. She said the North is seeking ways to hold dialogue with the U.S., but she refused to reveal the details of the U.S.-North Korea contact in Oslo in early May.

DiMaggio said that North Korea will accept the U.S.’ proposal for dialogue if the situation is right, insisting that the issue of North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs cannot be resolved by only sanctions and a show of force.

DiMaggio was a delegate at the so-called one-point-five track dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea in the Norwegian city and held talks with Choe Son-hui, director-general of the North Korean Foreign Ministry's North America bureau.
