S. Korea Rescues 2 N. Korean Ships in East Sea

South Korea rescued two North Korean ships drifting in the East Sea on Friday and Saturday.

Unification Ministry spokesman Lee Duk-haeng said Monday that a South Korean naval vessel rescued a North Korean boat with one sailor aboard in waters 196 kilometers east of South Korea’s Goseong County in Gangwon Province on Friday.

The other rescue came on Saturday when South Korean coast guards spotted a North Korean ship carrying three crewmembers adrift in waters 46 kilometers northwest from Ulleung Island in the East Sea at 4:40 p.m.

The spokesman said that all the rescued North Korean sailors are being questioned and that the government will respect their wishes in taking the next steps.

On May 27th, South Korean coast guards rescued two North Korean fishing boats in the East Sea, each of which was carrying three crewmembers, respectively. All of the six North Korean sailors returned home on Wednesday.
