Yomiuri: Japan Mulls Law Enabling Seizing of N. Korean Ships

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reports Tokyo is considering independent sanctions that would enable it to impound North Korean ships that enter its waters.

The report says the new sanctions would be aimed at thoroughly implementing United Nations Security Council(UNSC) resolutions while blocking the flow of materials and funds into the North.

The sanctions would allow Japan to seize designated North Korean ships which are subject to asset freeze under the resolutions if they enter Japanese waters.

Tokyo reportedly has 27 specific ships in mind, belonging to the North’s leading shipping company, Ocean Maritime Management(OMM), as possible subjects for confiscating.

The Security Council called on U.N. members in Resolution 2270 to freeze the assets of OMM-associated ships that sail in their waters.
