NK News: N. Korea Adopts Mobile E-Payment System

NK News reports that mobile phone-based foreign currency payments are now available in North Korea for both North Koreans and visitors to the country.

The U.S.-based news Web site specializing in North Korean affairs said that the availability of the mobile e-payment system was publicized on an instructional poster at Yanggakdo International Hotel in Pyongyang.

In order to make payments with the system, customers must first deposit foreign currency on their Narae card, an electronic payment card introduced by the North Korea’s Foreign Trade Bank in 2010.

North Korea is known to have introduced a mobile-based foreign currency payment system called “Jonsong” for North Korean people last year.
