JCS Launches Probe Upon Report of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in Gangwon Hills

Military authorities launched an investigation after receiving a report that an unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted in hills in Gangwon Province.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) said Friday that a joint probe team is combing through the region after receiving the report from a resident at eleven a.m.

The JCS said it will later explain what the probe team has found.

Some observers have raised the possibility that the aerial vehicle could be a drone sent by North Korea’s military.

The North’s military has sent drones to regions near its border with the South with the purpose of monitoring and spying on the South’s military. In response, the South’s military has boosted its surveillance along the border against North Korean drone activity.

In January of 2016, a North Korean drone flew over the Military Demarcation Line. The South’s military fired warning shots after broadcasting warning announcements. The drone reportedly headed back to the North following the South's warning shots.
