Newly appointed Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Monday that South Korea must support UN resolutions denouncing North Korea’s poor human rights situation.
 
Kang made the remark in a meeting with reporters after her inauguration on Monday.
 
She said that as a human rights expert, she fundamentally believes that South Korea must continue its support toward the UN’s North Korea human rights resolutions.
 
In 2004 and 2005, South Korea abstained from a vote on a UN resolution on North Korea's human rights. Then South Korea voted in favor of the resolution in 2006 when Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test. But the following year, Seoul again abstained from voting as an inter-Korean summit took place that year.
 
From 2008, when the Lee Myung-bak government launched, South Korea has continuously voted in favor of the resolution.
 
Meanwhile, on the South Korea-Japan agreement on Japan’s wartime sexual slavery, Kang said South Korea needs to carry out policy consultations and analysis and continue communication and dialogue with Japan based on that.
