Gov't: Health Status of S. Koreans Detained in N. Korea Unconfirmed

The Unification Ministry says information on six South Koreans detained in North Korea is undetermined.

The ministry’s spokesman, Lee Duk-haeng, told reporters on Wednesday that the six South Koreans who came to be detained in 2013 and 2014 were confirmed to be healthy at that time through an interview with North Korean media. However, Lee said since that interview, the health status or any other information about them has not been determined.

Lee said that the South Korean government sought to convey to the detainees news about their families on two occasions via the International Committee of the Red Cross. He also said that South Korea had demanded their repatriation on four occasions at inter-Korean meetings.

Lee said Seoul will devise various measures so that the South Koreans will be able to swiftly return home.

A total of six South Koreans, including pastors Kim Jung-wook, Kim Kuk-gi and Choe Chun-gil, are determined to be in captivity in the North.
