"We reiterated to China that they have a diplomatic responsibility to exert much greater economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime if they want to prevent further escalation in the region."

At the Diplomatic and Security Dialogue in Washington on Wednesday, the U.S. and China agreed that their companies should not do business with North Korean companies that are subject to UN sanctions.

The meeting paired U.S. State Secretary Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui, chief of joint staff of the People's Liberation Army.

Secretaries Tillerson and Mattis told reporters that Washington and Beijing also reaffirmed that their aim is a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

"Whether it is money laundering, extorting Korean expatriates, or malicious cyber activity, North Korea has engaged in a number of criminal enterprises that helped fund its weapons programs. We must step up our efforts to help to curtail the sources of revenue."

" ...we affirm North Korea's nuclear missile programs as a threat to peace and security in the Asia and Pacific Region. We also affirmed our strong commitment to cooperate, including through the UN, to realize our shared goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Meanwhile we'll continue to take necessary measures to defend ourselves and our allies."

The meeting came in the wake of the death of Otto Warmbier, who was released by North Korea in a coma after a 17 month detention.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday tweeted that Chinese efforts to reign in Pyongyang did not work.

Tillerson said that Trump now plans to make a state visit to China later this year.
