SCMP: US Lawmakers, Business Leaders Call for Secondary Sanctions against N. Korea

A movement to enforce so-called secondary sanctions against companies and individuals doing business with North Korea is reportedly gaining momentum in the U.S. Congress.

The  South China Morning Post(SCMP) based in Hong Kong reports U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and several other lawmakers are increasingly critical of China for what they perceive as hampering international efforts to clamp down on North Korean income streams.

In a U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committees hearing this week, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley expressed support for secondary sanctions to stop the North from producing a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.

Haley’s remarks and the broader secondary sanctions effort are seen as directed mainly at China, which the United States has frequently criticized for failing to prevent its companies from transacting with North Korea.
