"Ex-Military, Diplomatic Leaders Urge US and N. Korea to Resume Talks"

An international group of former military commanders and diplomats has urged the U.S. and North Korea to immediately resume bilateral talks without preconditions.

According to American political-journalism company, Politico, the group called the “Nuclear Crisis Group” made the proposal in an eleven-page report on Wednesday. The group is made up of former military and diplomatic leaders from countries that have nuclear weapons, including the U.S., China, Russia, India and Pakistan.

The group also called on Washington and Pyongyang to "refrain from nuclear threats and adopt nuclear no-first-use statements.” In a bid to further reduce tensions, the group said that the U.S. should "suspend flights of strategic bombers and visits by strategic submarines in return for key commensurate restraints by North Korea."

Politico noted that the group’s calls coincided with a letter Wednesday to U.S. President Donald Trump from a bipartisan group of former top U.S. leaders, including former Defense Secretary William Perry, former State Secretary George Shultz and former top nuclear negotiator Robert Gallucci.

In the letter, the bipartisan group said “tightening sanctions can be useful in increasing pressure on North Korea, but sanctions alone will not solve the problem.”

The group added that “without a diplomatic effort to stop its progress, there is little doubt” that North Korea “will develop a long-range missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to the United States.”
