Report: South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) announced that North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the East Sea from a location near Banghyeon, North Pyongang Province at around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The missile traveled more than 930 kilometers toward the northeast from its launching point.

The JCS said that South Korean and U.S. military authorities are jointly analyzing data on the missile, including its type and flight level.

Tuesday’s launch was North Korea’s eleventh missile test-firing this year and the fifth to take place since President Moon took office.

In May, the North fired a Pukguksong-2 medium-range ballistic missile(MRBM), a Hwasong-12 strategic missile, a Scud missile and a surface-to-air missile. Last month, the North test-fired several cruise missiles.

The North apparently launched the missile on Tuesday to protest close cooperation between Seoul and Washington on tackling the North’s provocations given the recent South Korea-U.S. summit.

Shortly after the missile launch, President Moon Jae-in convened a standing committee meeting of the National Security Council(NSC).

Moon was said to have been making preparations after being made aware of signs of the North's imminent launch before the missile was fired.

An official of the presidential office said that the North’s latest launch is likely to be part of the armed provocations that Pyongyang engages in every year around the U.S.’ Independence Day which falls on July fourth.
