Report: It was 9:40 a.m. Tuesday when South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) detected a ballistic missile launch from North Korea.

The JCS said that the missile flew more than 930 kilometers toward the East Sea from its launch site near Banghyeon, North Pyongang Province.

Military sources suggested that the projectile could have been an inter-continental ballistic missile(ICBM), noting that the projectile reached an altitude of over two-thousand-500 kilometers before descending.

Some six hours after the launch, North Korea's state-run Korean Central Television(KCTV) carried an announcement that the regime has succeeded in developing an inter-continental ballistic missile.

It said that the Hwasong-14 intercontinental missile went over two-thousand-800 kilometers high and flew for a total of 39 minutes to hit a target in the East Sea.

The announcement also stated that the newly developed missile can hit any target around the globe.

Missile experts said that the technical specifics mean that the missile can fly six-thousand 700 kilometers, or far enough to hit Alaska, if fired at a standard angle.

Shortly after the missile launch, President Moon Jae-in convened a standing committee meeting of the National Security Council(NSC).

Moon was said to have been making preparations after being made aware of signs of the North's imminent launch before the missile was fired.
