News2017-07-05

Anchor: In the wake of what appears to be an inter-continental ballistic missile launch in North Korea, the allied forces of South Korea and the U.S. staged a sudden missile exercise. South Korea and the U.S. staged a joint ballistic missile exercise in the east coast at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Presidential chief press secretary Yoon Young-chan told reporters that the unscheduled exercise came at President Moon Jae-in's order the previous night.

Moon instructed his national security adviser Chung Eui-yong to conduct the precision strike drill, saying that the latest North Korean missile provocation calls for more than just a statement.

Chung on Tuesday night called his White House counterpart Herbert McMaster to get U.S. President Donald Trump’s concurrence on the plan.

Trump was cited as highly evaluating Moon's resolute position against the North Korean threat.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the allied forces mobilized the 300-kilometer range Hyunmoo-2A ballistic missile and the U.S.' Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, to demonstrate their fire power.

President Moon has recently attended the test launch of an extended 800-kilometer range Hyunmoo-2C missile.

The JCS said that the drill proved the allied troops capabilities to destroy enemy command posts.

After their sudden missile exercise, the South Korean JCS Chairman Lee Sun-jin and Commander Vincent Brooks of the Combined Forces Command(CFC) declared their fight-tonight resolve.

In the statement, the generals said that the allied forces are only exercising self-restraint but that can change at the order of their commanders in chief as the live fire drill had shown.

The move came in the wake of what appeared to be an inter-continental ballistic missile(ICBM) launch in North Korea on Tuesday. After flying a ballistic missile to over 930 kilometers into the East Sea, North Korea said that its ICBM Hawsong -14 proved its capability to strike any target around the globe.
