Xi, Putin Issue Statement on Korean Crisis

Russia and China issued a joint statement on a comprehensive solution to the Korean Peninsula issues in response to the latest missile launch by North Korea.

Following their summit in Moscow, President Vladimir Putin and President Xi Jinping released the statement based on China’s idea of halting both North Korea’s missile and nuclear activities and the South Korea-U.S. combined military drills.

The statement said the opposing sides should start negotiations and affirm general principles of their relations including the non-use of force, rejection of aggression and peaceful co-existence.

Both Russia and China expressed grave concern over the missile launch and made it clear that the act is intolerable and violates UN Security Council resolutions.

In particular, the two countries urged for the immediate cancellation of the plan to deploy the THAAD antimissile system in South Korea, adding the deployment will cause serious harm to the strategic security interests of regional states, including Russia and China.
