Defense Minister Han Min-koo says that the U.S. THAAD antimissile system is the best defense against short and mid-range missiles from North Korea.
 
The minister made the remarks in a report to the parliamentary defense committee on Wednesday, saying that THAAD is effective in intercepting short and medium-range missiles, but not intercontinental ballistic missiles.
 
He said that although the operation of the missile shield began on May first, additional THAAD deployment will be decided on after procedural drawbacks are addressed and supplementary environmental surveys are conducted.
 
Han added that the government will take appropriate measures to counter North Korean provocations even during the deliberations.
