NYT: US to Use Civilian Satellites to Track N. Korean Missiles
The U.S. government will reportedly soon begin to use civilian satellites in collecting intelligence to help track and detect North Korean missiles.
The New York Times(NYT) reported on Thursday that Silicon Valley startup Capella Space plans to loft 36 orbital radar satellites beginning late this year.
The radar sensors of such civilian satellites can function in darkness or during storms and even detect missiles launching from mobile launchers.
The satellites, some staying in orbit for just one or two years, would provide intelligence necessary to execute a new U.S. military contingency plan, called “Kill Chain,” or preemptive missile strike system.
The NYT said many other Silicon Valley firms are jumping on the bandwagon to provide satellite intelligence services for the U.S. government.
