Gov’t Denies Differences with US over Proposed Inter-Korean Talks

The Unification Ministry has said that there are no significant differences between Seoul and Washington regarding the South Korean government's proposal to hold inter-Korean talks.
A ministry official told reporters on Tuesday that Seoul gave full explanations to Washington through a diplomatic channel before the announcement of the proposal.
The remarks come after the White House said that the current situation is far from desirable for inter-Korean dialogue.
The official added that the U.S. has expressed understanding and the White House’s comment is basically in sync with the South Korean government’s stance.
The official explained that Seoul’s latest proposal for talks doesn’t mean that conditions have become mature for cross-border dialogue.
The official noted Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon’s remarks, which defined the proposed talks as initial-stage contact aimed at easing tensions and laying foundations for improving relations between the two Koreas.
He added that the offered talks are far from a genuine or full-scale inter-Korean dialogue.
