Asahi: US Intends to Slap Sanctions on Chinese Firms that did Business with N. Korea

A leading Japanese daily says that the U.S. conveyed to China its intention to slap independent sanctions on around ten Chinese firms and individuals that conducted business with North Korea.

According to the Asahi Shimbun on Thursday, the U.S. unveiled the intention during a comprehensive economic dialogue with China in Washington on Wednesday.

The sanctions are expected to be applied on key companies that have trade dealings with the North, including Dandong Zhicheng Metallic Material and Mingzheng International Trading Limited.

C4ADS, a U.S. security analysis organization, said that Dandong Zhicheng Metallic Material is the largest importer of North Korea coal and Mingzheng International Trading is suspected of money laundering for the North’s state-run Foreign Trade Bank which is under U.S. sanctions.

If the U.S. goes ahead with the punitive step, the sanctions would be the largest for the U.S. to slap on a third country with regard to the North’s nuclear and missile provocations.

The daily also said that the U.S. is planning to place a number of Russian companies under sanctions as well.
