NHK: US Military Analyzing Unusual Activity of N. Korean Submarine
U.S. authorities are analyzing the activity of a North Korean Romeo-class submarine that has been in the East Sea for a week now.
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said Sunday that the North Korean submarine had ordinarily carried out deployment activity for four days in the past but this time, it has continued such activity for a week and the U.S. military is currently studying the diesel-powered vessel closely.
The U.S. military suspects the latest move could signal that the North is preparing another missile launch as just last week, the North tested a technology related to a submarine-launched ballistic missile at its Sinpo South Shipyard.
Last week, the U.S.-based North Korea monitoring Web site "38 North" said it believes that Pyongyang may be preparing to test an updated submarine-launched ballistic missile.
The Web site cited that recent satellite imagery indicated a recent redeployment of a Sinpo-class submarine and a submersible test stand barge at the Sinpo South Shipyard.
Intelligence authorities in Seoul, Washington and Tokyo are said to be keeping a close eye on the communist state as there have also been indicators that the North is preparing to conduct another intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM) launch.
