N. Korean Defector who Repeated Defection Arrested on Espionage Charges

A North Korean defector who re-entered North Korea and subsequently defected again has been arrested on espionage charges.

South Korean police said on Friday that they arrested the 40-year-old North Korean man, only identified by his surname Kang, on charges of espionage activities.

Kang reportedly escaped from North Korea in early 2015 and settled in South Korea’s Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province before re-entering North Korea in September last year and appearing on the North’s propaganda Web site Uriminzokkiri, criticizing South Korean society.

Kang defected from the North again this year and was arrested while attempting to enter South Korea with a false passport at Incheon International Airport.

The police suspect that North Korean authorities sent Kang to South Korea for intelligence collection, and referred the case to the prosecution.
