President Moon Jae-in ordered the swift discussion with the U.S. on the deployment of additional THAAD missile defense launchers, in response to the North Korean missile test. 

Defense Minister Song Young-moo issued a statement Saturday saying South Korea and the U.S will soon deploy strategic assets to the peninsula.

It adds the alliance has already conducted a successful surface-to-surface missile drill since the North Korean launch, demonstrating its capability to swiftly target the North's leadership.

Moon administration officials say in addition to U.S.-provided THAAD missile defense, South Korea also plans to build its own deterrence system against the North’s nuclear weapons and missiles.
