Prime Minister: N. Korea Nearing Red Line

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon has warned Pyongyang that it is nearing Seoul’s red line with its latest intercontinental ballistic missile(ICBM) launch.

Lee made the warning on Monday in a meeting with reporters marking two months since taking office, noting the security situation of the Korean Peninsula now faces a fundamental shift.

He said there is a high possibility the North will betray the wishes of South Korea and the international community by strengthening and continuing provocations.

Referring to President Moon Jae-in’s speeches on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Germany early this month, the prime minister explained the president simultaneously issued a warning over the North’s provocations and proposed inter-Korean talks through the speeches.

Lee added the North’s continuous provocations are closing off the opportunity for carrying out Moon’s peace initiatives as the rogue nation edges closer to Seoul’s red line.

The prime minister said although the South will not entirely close the door on dialogue with North Korea, it can’t treat the North as if nothing had happened, adding Seoul is holding official and unofficial discussions with relevant countries to seek advice in handling the matter.
