S. Korea, US Review Deploying US Assets to Korean Peninsula

A South Korean government official said Wednesday that Seoul is reviewing the deployment of U.S. strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula around the time of the Ulchi-Freedom Guardian(UFG) joint military exercise with the U.S.

The official said this was because North Korea could stage another provocation, taking issue with the combined exercise.

U.S. strategic assets that could be deployed to the peninsula include the nuclear-powered supercarriers USS Carl Vinson or USS Ronald Reagan.

Washington sent two nuclear aircraft carriers to waters near the peninsula for a joint drill in late May when North Korea carried out a series of provocations.

A Seoul official said it's unusual for U.S. strategic assets to be deployed for the Ulchi-Freedom Guardian as the UFG is a command post exercise, adding that the planned movement of the aircraft carrier cannot be confirmed.
