Unification Ministry: S. Korea, US on Same Page on N. Korea

Seoul is seeking to put to rest concerns about differences it may have with Washington on North Korea, saying they are on the same page.

Unification Ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun reiterated the government's stance during a regular briefing on Wednesday in response to a question about foreign media reports that U.S. President Donald Trump is getting more aggressive, even mentioning a possible war with the North.

The spokesman clarified South Korea is no different from the U.S. in that they are both sternly dealing with provocations by the North, drawing a parallel between President Moon Jae-in’s two-track approach of pressure and dialogue and President Trump’s maximum pressure and engagement policy.

He added both presidents ensured through a joint statement after their summit that they do not hold hostile policies toward the North.

In addition, he noted that Moon clarified last month, on the sidelines of the G-20 in Germany, that Seoul does not seek the North's collapse or unification through absorption. Baek said he thinks the U.S. has similar views.

NBC on Tuesday quoted Senator Lindsey Graham as saying Trump said he will have war with North Korea rather than allow the regime to have an intercontinental ballistic missile with a nuclear weapon capability to hit America.
