Gov’t: S. Korea, U.S. Closely Cooperating on N. Korea

The Unification Ministry says that South Korea is closely cooperating with the U.S. in addressing the North Korean nuclear problem.

Ministry spokeswoman Lee Yoo-jin said in a news briefing Friday that South Korea and the U.S. clearly agree on Seoul’s leading role in promoting the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas as manifested in a recent joint statement by their presidents.

Lee made the remarks in response to a question about North Korea’s apparent move to only negotiate with the U.S. and leave South Korea out of the process.

Regarding Pyongyang’s silence on Seoul’s dialogue proposals, the spokeswoman said that the government will continue to work patiently to persuade the North to denuclearize and establish peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
