Foreign Minister Arrives in Manila for ASEAN Meetings

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says she will stress the need for the international community to unite and send a strong message of zero nuclear tolerance to North Korea at upcoming meetings of the the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN.

Kang arrived in Manila Saturday, where she plans to join the South Korea-ASEAN foreign ministerial meeting on Sunday, then ASEAN Plus Three, East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum talks on Monday.

She's planning bilateral meetings with her counterparts from 15 nations, including the U.S., China, Japan and host nation the Philippines on the sidelines of the event.

It's unclear whether Foreign Minister Kang will have any contact with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, who will also be attending the ASEAN events.

Ri is scheduled to arrive in Manila early Sunday morning. He was seen arriving in Beijing on Saturday on his way to the Philippine city.

He is expected to express Pyongyang's opposition to a new set of sanctions under discussion at the U.N. Security Council to punish its launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
