Report: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong-ho held talks on Sunday on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum(ARF).
During the meeting, Wang reportedly asked North Korea not to conduct missile launches or nuclear tests following the UN Security Council’s adoption of new sanctions against the North.
South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha also had her first official meeting with the Chinese foreign minister.
Wang expressed regret over Seoul’s decision to install four remaining launchers of the U.S. THAAD antimissile system, saying it threw cold water on relations between the two nations.
In response, Kang reiterated the government’s position that the THAAD deployment is for national defense against North Korea, stressing the need for communication to resolve the conflict between the nations.
The ARF Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will open on Monday, and will bring together the top ministers of the ASEAN members and all six nations of the six-party talks.
The East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Plus Three, which includes South Korea, China and Japan, are also scheduled for Monday.
Minister Kang on Monday will have a luncheon meeting with her American and Japanese counterparts Rex Tillerson and Taro Kono to confirm solid cooperation among the three nations regarding North Korean issues.
