Report: During the telephone talks that lasted almost an hour, President Moon Jae-in said that he cannot accept another war breaking out on the Korean Peninsula.

Following the phone talks Monday morning, Presidential spokesman Park Soo-hyun told reporters that Moon emphasized that Seoul and Washington should work together to lead North Korea to the negotiating table.

In the wake of the UN Security Council's adoption of new sanctions on North Korea, Moon pointed to the need to show Pyongyang that the door for dialogue remains open, as long as the regime chooses to give up its nuclear ambitions.

U.S. President Donald Trump agreed that Seoul and Washington must pursue a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue through close cooperation.

Trump said that the UN Security Council’s unanimous adoption of its latest sanctions on North Korea has brought a significant change in the situation, calling for thorough implementation of sanctions and maximum pressure on North Korea.

Moon and Trump also discussed the possibility of further provocations by North Korea before their planned joint military exercises at the end of this month, and agreed to deter provocations through the allied forces' defense capabilities.

A presidential official said that the two leaders also discussed the issue of increasing the weight of warheads on South Korean missiles and the nation's adoption of nuclear-powered naval submarines.

The South Korean presidential spokesman said that during the talks Trump also cited the massive defense cost needed to maintain the allied troops on the Korean Peninsula. Trump then called for revising the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement to make up the defense spending by reducing trade deficits against South Korea.

Moon was said to have called for joint efforts to improve the bilateral trade deal.
