Gov’t Pledges Utmost Efforts for Return of S. Koreans Detained in N. Korea

The Unification Ministry has pledged to continue multi-directional efforts to bring home South Koreans detained in North Korea.

A ministry official told reporters on Thursday that Seoul has been calling on the North to quickly release and repatriate South Korean detainees via various channels, such as inter-Korean talks, cross-border notices and international organizations like the UN working group on enforced and involuntary disappearances.

He said that the government is doing its best in cooperation with other countries and international agencies.

But the official added that the regime has never accepted South Korea's requests to contact the South Korean detainees via foreign embassies in Pyongyang.

The ministry said that six South Koreans are currently detained in the North.
