Japan Denounces N. Korea's Threat to Guam

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has strongly condemned North Korea for saying that it is reviewing an operation for making an "enveloping fire" around the U.S. territory of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean.

Suga said in a news conference on Thursday that the North’s statement is a clear provocation against the security of the region and the international community. He stressed that such provocation will not, by any means, be tolerated.

Suga said the North must sincerely accept the international community’s repeated warnings and condemnations and abide by UN Security Council resolutions while refraining from engaging in further provocations.

The top official added that Washington and Tokyo have agreed to take substantial action to boost their defense system and capacity.

He said the two countries will discuss ways to continuously strengthen their deterrence and response capability during meetings of their foreign and defense ministers set to open next Thursday.
