Top Office Downplays Call for Redeployment of US Tactical Nuke

The presidential office has downplayed a former presidential security adviser’s call for the redeployment of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea.
Park Sun-won, who is known as a security adviser to President Moon Jae-in and was the former presidential secretary for security strategy under the Roh Moo-hyun government, recently said in a social media post that the nation should secure nuclear capabilities in response to North Korea’s nuclear power.
He also said that Seoul needs to announce the suspension of the U.S. THAAD antimissile system while it reintroduces U.S. tactical nuclear weapons.
A presidential office official told reporters on Monday that Park’s calls are just his personal opinion.
Park’s calls counter the Moon government’s stance on U.S. tactical nuclear weapons, while the conservative opposition Liberty Korea Party adopted their redeployment as its party policy.
