Unification Ministry Probing Defectors' Alleged Involvement in Smear Campaign
Seoul’s Unification Ministry is looking into allegations North Korean defectors were hired by the nation’s spy agency to post Internet propaganda helpful to the former Lee Myung-bak administration.
Local media outlets have reported suspicions the National Intelligence Service(NIS) paid members of a defectors' civic group to post progovernment and antiopposition messages with the aim of swaying public opinion.
The civic group is known as the North Korean Intellectuals Society.
Unification Ministry deputy spokeswoman Lee Yoo-jin told reporters Friday the ministry will take measures if there is found to be any truth to the accusations.
