VOA: US Soldier Who Defected to N. Korea Dies of Stroke

Voice of America(VOA) said Tuesday that a U.S. soldier who defected to North Korea decades ago was confirmed to have died.

The U.S. international broadcaster quoted the two sons of James Dresnok as saying in a video interview posted on the North’s propaganda Web site “Uriminjokkkiri” last Friday that their father died while receiving treatment for a stroke.

Dresnok, who was known to be the only U.S. soldier to still be living in the North after defecting, crossed the inter-Korean border in August 1962.

He went on to appear in North Korean propaganda films that condemned the U.S. and was said to have translated speeches into English for North Korean founder Kim Il-sung and taught English at universities.

The exact date of Dresnok’s death was not confirmed.
