"Donggang Hit Hard by China's Ban on N. Korean Seafood Imports"

An English-language Chinese newspaper says seafood business in the Chinese city of Donggang, which borders North Korea, has been hit hard after Beijing placed a ban on North Korean seafood imports beginning last Tuesday.

According to the Global Times under the People’s Daily on Monday, the new ban, which went into effect with no grace period, “caused losses in the hundreds of millions of yuan for seafood merchants of border cities, including those from Hunchun of Northeast Jilin Province and Donggang.”

The report noted that “Donggang, which is administered by Dandong, northeastern China's Liaoning Province, serves as a national hub for the seafood trade between China and North Korea.”

The paper said that U.N. Resolution 2371 is expected to slash North Korean revenue by some one billion U.S. dollars. The report quoted an anonymous insider as saying that “the seafood export business used to account for about one-third of North Korea's foreign currency earnings.”

Last Monday, China’s commerce and customs officials announced that China will stop importing coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood from North Korea in line with the U.N. resolution and with domestic law governing overseas trade.
