Civil Defense Drill Conducted on 5 Islands in Yellow Sea

A civil defense drill was carried out on Wednesday on five islands in the Yellow Sea near the inter-Korean sea border, including Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong Islands.

The drill, which was also conducted in Seoul, centered on practicing the public's preparedness and response in the event of North Korean air strikes.

The drill began with an air-raid siren going off at 2 p.m. During the following 15 minutes, the residents of the islands practiced evacuating to air-raid shelters.

Ongjin Country inspected both wired and wireless communication networks and village broadcasting services under a simulated enemy air-raid.

The drill came in line with the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Guardian joint exercise between Seoul and Washington.

Such civil defense drills first began in 1968 after North Korean commandos carried out an unsuccessful attack on the presidential office to assassinate the South Korean president on January 21st of the same year.
