RFA: N. Korea Attempting to Hack into S. Korean Virtual Currency Exchanges

Radio Free Asia reports that North Korea is continuing extensive attempts to hack into the computer networks of South Korean virtual currency exchanges.

The international broadcaster made the report on Thursday, citing a cyber warfare research center following and studying hacking activities by the North.

According to the research center, virtual currency exchanges in South Korea are facing continued hacking attacks believed to be conducted by North Korea. It added that smaller South Korean companies using Internet-based financial technologies are also being targeted by North Korean hackers.

The companies’ employees received emails sent under the names of South Korean government authorities, such as the Fair Trade Commission or other financial watchdogs. But the emails were found to have contained malicious codes, which had been discovered in past computer attacks conducted by the North.

North Korea has secured virtual currency since 2012. It is estimated that hackers presumed to be North Korean have collected some 300-thousand dollars’ worth of virtual currency since 2013.
