THAAD Temporary Deployment Expected Soon

Anchor: President Moon Jae-in's top security adviser has said he expects the temporary deployment of four additional THAAD launchers to be completed "in the near future." However, his comments come as a Liberty Korea Party senior lawmaker claims the U.S. has called on South Korea to complete the full deployment of THAAD by the end of this month.

Report: President Moon Jae-in's top security adviser said Thursday that he expects the temporary deployment of four additional launchers of the THAAD antimissile system to be completed "in the near future."

Chung Eui-yong, the chief of the National Security Office, made the remark during a parliamentary budget committee session in response to a question on the matter.

Chung’s comments are conflicting with those of Liberty Korea Party senior lawmaker Lee Chul-woo, who on Thursday told reporters that the U.S. called on South Korea to complete the deployment of THAAD by August 30th.

Lee said it was directly quoted to him by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon. The prime minister, however, has denied making any such claim.

When asked about the original source of the remark, Rep. Lee assumed that it was one of the high level U.S. military officials who recently visited the country.

If the remark is founded this could emerge as a key conflicting issue between Seoul and Washington.

A THAAD battery consists of six truck-mounted launchers. So far, two launchers have been deployed.

Soon after North Korea’s long-range missile launch in July, President Moon Jae-in ordered his government to seek the temporary deployment of the other four. However, Seoul has said a full-on deployment will not be decided on until after an environmental assessment.
