Trump, Abe Agree to Strengthen Pressure on N. Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have agreed to intensify pressure on North Korea for the regime’s ballistic missile launch earlier Tuesday morning.

According to Kyodo News, Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters that the two leaders reached the agreement in a 40-minute phone call on Tuesday morning.

Nishimura quoted the two leaders as saying that now is not a time to pursue dialogue with Pyongyang, but a time to strengthen pressure.

Abe later told reporters that during the phone call, Trump said the U.S. was "100 percent with Japan."

The Japanese prime minister explained that the promise shows Washington's strong commitment to Tokyo's defense.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the latest missile launch and how to respond to it. The meeting was jointly requested by South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.
