Moon, Abe to Pressure N. Korea to Extreme Level

News2017-08-30

President Moon Jae-in agreed with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to further press North Korea to sit at the dialogue table.

In telephone talks held Wednesday, the two leaders shared the view that Seoul and Tokyo should increase pressure to an "extreme level" to induce Pyongyang to voluntarily sit down for talks.

Presidential Spokesman Park Soo-hyun said the two sides highly evaluated their unprecedented level of collaboration in the face of North Korea's provocation.

It was the fifth telephone talks between Moon and Abe; twice in May and three times this month.

President Moon said the missile launch through Japanese airspace went beyond a provocation and was an "outrageous violence" against a neighboring country.

He told Abe that the Seoul government immediately convened a National Security Council meeting to denounce the launch and had four Air Force fighters conduct a bombing exercise in a show of force, which he called the highest level response South Korea has taken.

Spokesman Park said the two leaders also agreed that the swift meeting of the UN Security Council(UNSC) and the adoption of a presidential statement was the result of close coordination between Seoul, Tokyo and Washington.

The two sides agreed to push for more concrete and effective UNSC sanctions and to lead the process with Washington while seeking the cooperation of China and Russia.

President Moon also conveyed sympathy regarding the threat and the apprehension felt by the Japanese people from North Korea's provocation.
