Top Office: Not Considering US Nuclear Weapon Deployment

The top office has dismissed speculation that the government is considering deploying U.S. nuclear weapons to South Korea to counter North Korean threats.
A senior presidential official made the remark to reporters on Friday after reports that Defense Minister Song Young-moo hinted at the possibility in a meeting with his U.S. counterpart at the Pentagon the previous day.
The official said the government respects the global non-proliferation regime and that South Korea continues to align its policy within that framework.
The official said Song’s remarks came up while explaining South Korea’s moves to strengthen its defense. The official noted that the presidential office has confirmed that Song didn’t mean to convey any support for deploying U.S. nuclear weapons.
