"N. Korean Seafood Still Smuggled into China Despite Toughened Sanctions"

News2017-09-01

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post(SCMP) reports tons of North Korean seafood products are being smuggled into China every day despite United Nations sanctions prohibiting the trade.

The paper quotes a Chinese trader based in the China-North Korea border city of Dandong as saying seafood imports have plunged by about 90 percent since China began enforcing newly passed U.N. sanctions listing North Korean seafood as a banned item.

However, the trader said he and other Chinese importers still manage to send about ten ships a day to fetch North Korean seafood during hours when the Chinese marine police are off duty.

According to the Chinese customs authorities, the North exported 68 million dollar worth seafood to China in the second quarter of this year.
