Report: President Moon Jae-in held phone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday and discussed ways to cooperate against North Korea’s missile provocations.
During the 40-minute phone call, the two leaders agreed to deter provocations through maximum sanctions and pressure, while at the same time stressing that the nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully.
Trump is said to have conveyed to Moon the importance of delivering a clear and strong message to the North.
They also agreed to revise the bilateral missile guideline to increase the maximum weight of South Korean warheads from 500 kilograms to a level sought by Seoul.
Moon expressed his sympathy over the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey before the two officials agreed to hold a summit in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in mid-September.
It was the third phone conversation between the two leaders since Moon’s inauguration. The talks were held three days after the North launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan.
Moon will also discuss ways to resolve the North’s nuclear program during summit meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok next week.
