UN Security Council to Hold Urgent Meeting to Discuss N. Korea

The UN Security Council(UNSC) will hold an urgent meeting in New York on Monday to discuss responses to North Korea’s sixth nuclear test.

The meeting was requested by South Korea, the United States, Japan, France and the U.K. Members are expected to condemn the provocation and discuss the possibility of additional sanctions.

Additional sanction measures could include banning oil exports to the North or prohibiting overseas employment of North Korean workers.

In a phone call with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington will pursue the strongest sanctions against the North.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono also told Kang in a phone call on Sunday that Seoul, Washington and Tokyo should closely cooperate so that the North clearly pays for its actions.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said in a statement on Sunday that the EU is ready to strengthen sanctions against the North.

However, it remains to be seen whether China and Russia, which have been against powerful sanctions that could lead to the collapse of the North Korean regime, will agree to new sanctions.
