Defense Ministry: Will Pursue Temporary Deployment of THAAD

The Defense Ministry says it will pursue the temporary deployment of THAAD in the near future.

The defense and environment ministries completed consultations over a small-scale environmental assessment on the deployment of the antimissile system on Monday.

As a result, the Defense Ministry will allow the U.S. to proceed with supplementary construction for the system's temporary deployment at the THAAD base.

Four THAAD launchers which are being stored at Camp Carroll in North Gyeongsang Province are expected to soon be brought onto the THAAD base. Some observers say the move could be completed within this week.

U.S. Forces Korea has been operating THAAD equipment that they brought in earlier on April 26th in a state of temporary deployment.

THAAD launchers can function properly if they are installed onto a stern concrete facility. For the temporary deployment, the launchers were installed on an aluminum pad instead.

This caused concern that the THAAD launchers would not function properly in the event of contingency due to the sinking of some of its equipment.
