The European Union's(EU) foreign policy chief said North Korea was "playing with fire," following its test of a hydrogen bomb on Sunday.

"The path undertaken by North Korea is dangerous, irresponsible and illegal. They are playing with fire and the flames could rapidly spread to the entire region and the whole world"

Federica Mogherini made the comment on Monday at the 2017 Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, adding that the European Union is ready to support new and tougher sanctions by the UN Security Council(UNSC) and to implement them immediately and fully.

She stressed the EU’s position that there was no military solution to the crisis and instead called for maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on the North.

The UNSC held another emergency meeting over North Korea on Monday where U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said the North’s actions show it is "begging for war." She also called for the strongest diplomatic measures to be adopted.

Also on Monday, South Korea's Defense Ministry revealed that North Korea appeared to be planning a future missile launch, possibly of an intercontinental ballistic missile, in a bid to show off its claimed capability to target the U.S. with nuclear weapons.
